Thousands of Christians across Arunachal Pradesh gathered in peaceful demonstrations on 30 April amid growing concern over the possible enforcement of a long-standing religious law in the north-eastern state.

The Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA), first introduced in 1978, has remained largely inactive for decades. However, renewed discussions by state authorities about bringing the law into effect have raised fears among Christian communities, who believe it could be used against religious minorities.

The Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF), which has led opposition to the law, organised statewide protests calling on the government not to move forward with new regulations linked to the Act.

Tensions have increased since 2024 as talks continued between Christian leaders, indigenous organisations and government representatives. A High-Power Committee (HPC) was established to discuss the matter, but recent meetings reportedly ended without agreement.

During one of the meetings held in April, members of the ACF left the discussions, claiming the committee did not fairly represent Christian concerns because several participants were supportive of the law.

Christian groups say they fear the legislation could be misused in ways similar to anti-conversion laws introduced in other parts of India. At present, 12 Indian states have such laws in place, with campaigners warning that more regions may follow.

The demonstrations in Arunachal Pradesh also came at a time when Christians in some tribal areas of Chhattisgarh have reported mounting pressure and hostility connected to their faith.

Despite the concerns, the protests remained calm and orderly. Christians from different denominations gathered together in unity under the banner of the ACF. In the state capital, believers reportedly stood in heavy rain for more than six hours as part of the demonstration.

Local Christian workers who observed the events said the atmosphere remained peaceful throughout the day. They noted that many believers were determined to express their concerns respectfully while remaining united in faith.

Many Christians in the region continue to hold on to hope despite increasing challenges. One participant at the protest said believers remained steadfast even during difficult times.
