A suicide bombing at a Greek Orthodox church in Syria has killed at least 22 Christians and injured 63 others. The attack took place during the Divine Liturgy at Mar Elias Church in Dweil’a, a suburb of Damascus, on Sunday, 22 June 2025.
Syrian state media reported that the attacker opened fire on worshippers before detonating an explosive vest. The Interior Ministry identified the assailant as a member of the Islamic State (ISIS), although no group has officially claimed responsibility.
Bishop Moises Moussa El Khoury of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East confirmed that the attacker also threw a grenade into the church. He described the attack as "a heartbreaking tragedy that targets the peace and faith of our community."
Syrian officials condemned the bombing as a “terrorist act aimed at sowing fear and division.” They pledged to strengthen security measures and intensify efforts against groups threatening the nation’s stability.
This tragic event highlights the continued risks faced by Christians in Syria amid years of conflict and persecution. Church leaders and human rights advocates have called for greater protection of religious minorities. Bishop El Khoury added, "We call on the international community to stand with us in solidarity, to protect the innocent, and to preserve the hope of peace in this troubled land."
