Christian NGOs continue to Assist Flood Victims, more help sought

Christian NGOs who have been working hard to assist flood victims in the country and South Asia are still trying their best to garner more financial support from generous donors to help the victims.

Christian relief organisations in the country are pleading for more support from individuals, foundations, corporations, and churches to help those who may be otherwise forgotten as there are no more floods but the impact of it is still felt.

'The worst flood in recent memory' according to UN report, had affected 20 million lives in India, Bangladesh and Nepal.

According reports, more than 3,200 people have lost their lives in South Asia, including 2,281 lives in the country.

After the flood recedes, the government mercenaries and relief organisations are working to avoid possible outbreak of waterborne diseases which are common a part from scarcity of food to those affected places which are inaccessible due to poor transportation in those areas.

Bihar, the worst hit state in the country, over 10,000 villages with 15 million population are affected by the worst flooding. More than 530 medical teams and 7,000 boats have been deployed in the state to provide medical care to the survivors, according to government sources. Military helicopters have dropped thousands of food packets to those affected.

In Orissa state, state government health workers are trying their best to contain the outbreak of waterborne diseases like diarrhoea and cholera where dozens of lives are already lost.

"We are requesting assistance from individuals, foundations, corporations, and churches – anyone who would like to join us in helping and comforting the individuals and families struggling for their lives at this time," says Brent Hample, President of India Partners, one of the Christian NGOs that working closely with Evangelical Fellowship of India Commission of Relief (EFICOR), a Christian relief and rehabilitation agency based in the capital.
