The hosting organization has deep historical roots. The NBCC Women Department was formed in 1967, with the suggestion of Meyatola Longchar, the former Director of School Education, who after returning from the 2nd Indian Women's Conference in Balasore, Orissa in 1965, asked the Ao Women Association to initiate the formation of Naga Baptist Women Union. An informal meeting was conducted under the leadership of Noksangchila and J. Savino on February 4, 1967, where they resolved to form the organization.

The working Committee met on May 24, 1967, at Mokokchung Town Baptist Church where NBWU was officially recognized as an affiliated body of NBCC. The first office bearers were J. Savino as President, Noksangchila as Secretary and Khrieü Sekhose as Treasurer. For better coordination with the Nagaland Baptist Church Council, the nomenclature was changed to Nagaland Baptist Church Council Women Department in 1985.
