A man in eastern Uganda has been killed after reportedly converting from Islam to Christianity, according to local sources.
The incident took place on 28 January in Iganga District, along the Kaliro–Iganga road, about five kilometres from Iganga town. The victim, 33-year-old Hamba Juma from Butaleja District, was allegedly attacked by his father, Hamba Ahammada, aged 62.
Family members said the accused used a long knife, commonly known in the region as a panga, during the assault.
Juma leaves behind a wife and four children, aged 12, 10, 7 and 3.
According to Juma’s wife, the family had spent the day planting rice before returning home, where they found Ahammada waiting for them. They later shared a meal together.
After supper, the father reportedly asked his 12-year-old grandson for the panga without raising suspicion. He then called his son outside. When Juma approached, believing his father needed assistance, he was attacked.
Neighbours reported seeing a motorcycle leaving the area at high speed shortly after the incident, leading to suspicions that the suspect may have fled with assistance.
Juma was taken for medical treatment but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Family members stated that Juma and his wife had recently converted to Christianity from Islam. They said relatives had previously expressed anger over their decision and had issued threats.
At the time of reporting, police had not confirmed any arrests or provided details of an investigation.
Uganda’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion, including the right to change one’s faith and share religious beliefs. Christians form the majority of the population, while Muslims account for approximately 12 per cent, with larger communities in eastern regions of the country.
This incident has raised renewed concerns among Christian groups about the safety of converts in some areas.
