How many of you have said, “I know that God has forgiven me but I cannot forgive myself”? Go on, be honest. I did it just now which is what has prompted me to write this to you; why? Because I realized it was a big mistake! Let me make one thing clear right now, you are no better than God in any way nor am I!
Well, you may say, of course not that’s why I feel so guilty. Then consider this, if God says 1‘As far as the east is from the west so far has He removed our transgressions from us’ and if He says He 2‘will remember their sins no more’ what right do we have to feel we do not deserve forgiveness when the sinless God has forgiven us?
Do you not know that 3‘while we were still sinners, Christ died for us,’ or is what Christ did on the cross for you, and all He suffered just not good enough? Do you think He should have done more? Yes we deserve punishment, 4‘for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.’ God has already punished sin. The sin you committed that is now consuming you with guilt, guess what, Jesus has already paid for it. Do you want to know something even more amazing than that? The sin that you are going to commit, next week, the week after, Jesus has already paid for that too.
If you accept God’s forgiveness then you must forgive yourself, move on and seek to do better with His help. If you do not forgive yourself and instead let the guilt eat away at you do you know what you are doing? You are rejecting God; you are rejecting what Christ did for you out of love. Yes, love, that’s why He did it. It is a gift. When someone who loves you gives you a gift on your birthday is it because you did anything special? No, it is given to you simply out of love. Yet do you have any trouble accepting it? I imagine not. So why are you struggling to accept the best possible gift from the best possible source?
Jesus wants you to live a fulfilled life with Him. He knows you can’t do that if you live permanently in guilt. That’s why He wants to wipe your slate clean and give you eternal life with Him. Accept it! It’s free!
