Police in Kerala have arrested several individuals following an alleged attack on a Christmas carol group in Palakkad district, an incident that has drawn condemnation from religious leaders and civil society groups.

The incident took place late on Sunday evening in the Pudussery-Kasaba area while a group of Christians, including children, were moving from house to house singing Christmas carols. According to police, the group was stopped by local men who objected to the programme and questioned their presence. A confrontation followed, during which members of the group were reportedly assaulted and musical instruments were damaged.

Based on witness statements and formal complaints, police registered a case under multiple sections of India’s criminal law, including offences related to unlawful restraint, physical harm and disturbing public order. The individuals taken into custody were later identified as members of a local political organisation.

Although no serious physical injuries were reported, families said the incident caused significant distress, particularly among the children involved.

The attack prompted strong reactions from political leaders, church representatives and community organisations, who expressed concern over the safety of religious celebrations and the need to protect communal harmony.

Police officials said the situation in the area is now under control and appealed for calm. The accused are expected to appear before a magistrate, and authorities indicated that further legal action may follow as the investigation continues.

The incident has added to broader concerns about interference with Christmas celebrations in different parts of the country. Observers in Kerala, a state known for its long history of religious coexistence, say the episode underscores the importance of safeguarding the rights of all communities to celebrate their faith peacefully.
