Seek the True Light

Recently I was watching a documentary on Las Vegas yesterday and many things fascinated me.

Popularly known as the 'Entertainment Capital of the World,' Las Vegas has earned the sobriquet, 'Vice City,' for, according to many, it is the ultimate destination for vacation, shopping, entertainment and gambling.

I was truly fascinated by the lights and sounds – the pomp and the splendor of the rows of casinos and night clubs that lined the Las Vegas Boulevard South, also known as the Las Vegas Strip – where many splurge their millions, few making more, most losing many.

But what amazed me the most is the deserted, ghostly look the city wore in the morning – as if the city was the target of blanket bombing the previous night. The city reminded me of a vampire, awake by night, steeped in sin and asleep by day.

I was very fascinated by the documentary, but after it concluded, I felt somewhat puzzled and empty. And, the image of the deserted, ghostly look Las Vegas wore during the day, haunted me.

Like Las Vegas, today's world has many things to offer. To fill our empty hearts, we are all seeking different things. You can find teens and adults alike spending hours in PC Game rooms that have mushroomed all over the world, especially in Japan and South Korea (not to mention the World Gaming Championship that is held every year). You can find people pursuing adventurous sports like Bungee Jumping, Para Gliding and River Rafting. And those seeking spirituality turn to New Age, Tantrism and occult practices. And, of course, those who are bored with everything in life, turn to drugs (of various types and effects). Truly, the list of things we can indulge in, is endless.

However, if we look deep within ourselves, we will find that our human heart is very dark and dry. We are all thirsty and are seeking for, not food or water, but something more that will last and fill our emptiness inside. Like Las Vegas, we are doing this and that, but sooner or later, we feel empty again and turn to other things, hoping against hope, hoping in vain that perhaps, the feeling of emptiness will never come again.

Looking at the documentary, I realized one truth – the lights of Las Vegas does not last. The light of the lamp does not last. Even the light of the sun does not last. If we truly want to fill our emptiness inside, we have to seek the true and eternal light – the light that can fill the dark recesses of our hearts.

Where can we find this light, this light that never goes out, the light that is eternal? The answer, my friends, lies in God. Only God can provide us with this light. Only He can give us the 'something' that will fill us up and never make us feel empty again. Because only He knows what each one of us are seeking and we need. Because only He knows us best.

And, looking at our thirsty hearts, our hungry spirits, God sent Jesus. To protect us from the harsh winters of life, Jesus was born. Jesus is the only Way, the Truth and the Life. He is the true and eternal Light of the world. When Jesus enters our lives, we are full, we seek nothing more. His love, His peace, His grace fill up our emptiness. His words are our spiritual food.

Every moment of our lives, we should seek Jesus, the Living Bread. When we 'eat' Jesus, we never become hungry again. We never become thirsty again. We never feel cold again.

When the true Light enters our lives, we quit pursuing the false lights, the lights that never last.

There are many false lights in this world. Do you feel empty? If yes, you are chasing a false light. Seek the true light then.

Indeed, this world has many things to offer to us. But remember, the lights of Las Vegas do not last.
