India is experiencing a steady increase in COVID-19 cases, with health authorities attributing the surge to the emergence of new variants, including JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFG.

As of June 3, 2025, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported 4,026 active COVID-19 cases nationwide. Kerala remains the most affected state, accounting for 1,416 active cases. Other states reporting significant numbers include Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.

In the past 24 hours, five COVID-19-related deaths were reported, bringing the total number of fatalities this year to 37. Health officials note that most new infections are presenting with mild symptoms, such as sore throat, low-grade fever, fatigue, and gastrointestinal discomfort.

The JN.1 variant, a sub-lineage of the Omicron family, is noted for its higher transmissibility and ability to partially evade immune defences. Despite this, current vaccines continue to provide protection against severe illness, hospitalisation, and death caused by JN.1.

In response to the rising cases, the Union Health Ministry has requested several states and union territories to implement preventive measures and submit reports on their preparedness.

Health experts advise the public to remain vigilant, adhere to safety protocols, and stay updated with local health guidelines regarding vaccination schedules and booster requirements.
