From September 15, the 375,000 Catholics in Mangalore district will be privileged to view a lone Christian Catholic channel called EWTN.
EWTN, a 24–hour Christian channel was debuted recently in Mumbai and had been struggling to get cable operators to run programmes in other parts of the country.
After a deal struck by a Christian association and the cable operators, the channel agreed to pay the annual carriage of Rs 394,000.
Father Victor Vijay Lobo, director, Canara Communication Centre and Vocation Service Centre of Mangalore diocese, when asked how the church would manage to raise the money, said, "Now that we have come through this major achievement of convincing the cable operators to carry EWTN, we will discuss on the ways to raise money. Catholics in the diocese should also contribute towards establishing EWTN here."
"The channel will be a powerful means of faith formation for Christian families," added Father Vijay, quoted SRS news.
GOD TV, another Christian channel that has a strong Christian media presence in India, was stopped by the cable operators recently, due to the non–payment of carriage fee. GOD TV pays about a half million rupees, for broadcasting the channel.
