Karnataka CM appoints 100 more guards for Church

As fresh violence against Churches in Karnataka came under probe, Karnataka Chief Minister Yeddyurappa ordered the state police to deploy 100 more home guards in and around churches in Dakshina Kannada district.

During a video conference with police authorities, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader demanded high priority to law and order.

Following the CM's urgent request, Maheshwar Rao, the deputy commissioner of the Dakshina Kannada district asked for 100 more home guards for maintaining communal harmony. The CM readily agreed for the deployment of forces in the district.

Although there is no law and problem order, Rao says, it would give more protection to the churches from near attacks.

Last week, over two Christian iconic statuettes were found damaged in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu.

Talking to reporters in Nagercoil, Kapil Kumar Saratkar, SP, said churches and prayer centres in the district had been brought under a tight security blanket. A five–member special squad had been deployed near all prayer centres.

“Gunasekaran, who damaged the Mother Mary statue in Muttom, has been arrested under three Sections including provocation of religious sentiments. We are also taking efforts to arrest him under the Goondas Act,” he said.
