An Ethiopian pastor who left Islam to follow Christ says he remains committed to sharing the gospel despite years of threats, violence and displacement.
Juhar Bekele, who became a Christian in 2016 while living in the Hurumu area of Ethiopia's Illu Ababora Zone, knew his decision would bring serious challenges. Since embracing Christianity, he has faced strong opposition from members of his former Muslim community because of his faith and evangelistic work.
After his conversion, Bekele began telling others about Jesus. However, his message was met with hostility, leading to growing pressure and rejection from people around him.
As tensions increased, Bekele was forced to leave his home and relocate to the town of Metu in search of safety and greater freedom to continue his ministry. Yet the move did not end the difficulties. He was reportedly assaulted because of his Christian faith and later moved again, this time to Jimma, hoping to find a more secure environment for his family.
According to Bekele, the threats and harassment continued, resulting in several further relocations over the years. In December 2025, he was reportedly attacked again while serving believers through underground house church gatherings.
Despite the dangers, Bekele says he remains determined to continue the work he believes God has called him to do. He continues to travel to different towns across south-west Ethiopia, sharing the Christian message and supporting local believers.
Bekele has also spoken of the emotional toll the persecution has taken on him and his family. Living under the constant threat of violence has created ongoing concerns for their safety. Nevertheless, he says his faith in God remains strong.
His experience reflects the challenges faced by many Christians in parts of Ethiopia, where conflict, instability and religious tensions have left some believers facing violence, displacement and hardship. In northern Ethiopia, the effects of the Tigray conflict have added to the difficulties experienced by many communities.
Even amid fear and uncertainty, Bekele says he has no intention of abandoning his Christian faith. He remains convinced that the hope found in Christ is worth sharing, regardless of the personal cost.
Those who know Bekele say his perseverance has encouraged other Christians who are also facing opposition because of their beliefs. While the risks remain high, he continues to trust God to protect and strengthen his family as he carries on with his ministry.
