Dalit Christians threatened to "reembrace Hinduism"

Alleging discrimination by upper caste Christians, Dalit Christians in Puducherry threatened to "reembrace Hinduism" if the issue continues staying dormant.

National President of the Federation of National Dalit Christians, M S Raj at a press conference said their ancestors converted to Christianity by the European and Portuguese inquisition. However, after their departure, the Dalit Christians have not been enjoying equal rights and protection, they previously received.

The upper Christians gradually grew to power and started ruling over the Dalit Christians, said Raj.

Raj further claimed that Dalit Christians had been deprived of several of their rights because of conversion and said they could not become a doctor, engineer, IAS or IPS officers due to the extreme suppression by higher caste Christians in all aspects.

Pointing the Erayur incident, Raj said, it is very evident that the Dalit christians are being discriminated, and peace could not be restored until police took over.

Meanwhile the Tamil Nadu Bishops Council Rev Fernando, will be holding a meeting with all the 18 Bishops in the state to bring about peace between the Dalits and the upper caste Christians.

If by August 15, no action has been undertaken to end the discrimination, Raj says, they would reembrace Hinduism.
