Church urged to remember 'Creator and Creation' on 10/10/10

Churches across the country have been urged to observe 10:10:10 (Oct 10, 2010) as a "Day of Creation" with prayers and eco-friendly activities in their premises and institutions.

The campaign by the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) stresses on remembering the "Creation and Creation" on Oct. 10 by holding prayers, vigils and actions.

"As 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity we especially encourage organizing prayers around this theme," Rev. Christopher Rajkumar, executive secretary of the commission on Justice, Peace and Creation of the NCCI, said.

"It is a very right occasion for us as a faith based community to make our members to be ecologically conscious," he noted.

The global ecumenical movement observe the 'Creation Time' from Sept. 1 to Oct. 4 every year.

This year, the WCC is proposing to extend the date till Oct. 10 to join the 101010 campaign that is uniting hundreds of organizations around the world to work on positive solutions to the climate crisis.

On Oct. 10, over 5,000 events are planned in 180 countries for the 10:10:10 Global Work Party, the largest day of carbon-cutting action in the planet's history.

Ecumenical leaders have expressed disappointment over the current climate crisis which they say is primarily "spiritual and ethical with serious political, economic and justice implications."

They lament that human beings have failed to "appreciate the intrinsic worth of ourselves, other humans, other species and future generations."

In a message honouring the Day for Creation, Sept. 1, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I expressed his hope that the financial and economic crisis experienced by many societies would bring about "a powerful change in direction, to a path of viable and sustainable environmental development."

Churches from a broad range of countries and traditions are in the midst of a 40 day Time for Creation participating with prayers and other activities.
