Ahmedabad: Christian leaders cutting across all denominations have demanded the resignation of the Mayor of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for his inaction in solving the problems faced by the minority Christian community in the city.
In a memorandum submitted to the Corporation Commissioner at the end of a rally organised on 1 July 2004, the leaders threatened to go on a fast–unto–death in front of the corporation building. They also warned of blocking Narol Circle leading to the Sewerage Treatment Plant.
Earlier the Christian leaders, along with the people of Ranipur village, numbering about 2,000, conducted a peaceful vehicle rally from the CNI Church at Ranipur village to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's main building at Danapith.
All India Christian Council's national executive member and joint secretary Samson C. Christian said that in spite of the protests and also written representations to the Mayor of the corporation, no steps had been taken to solve the issue. The agitation would continue until their genuine demands were met, he added.
