The Justice, Peace and Development Commission of Delhi Archdiocese held a candle light demonstration on Sunday, Oct. 7 evening at the Sacred Heart Cathedral.
The procession was to show solidarity with the Monks and Democracy movement in Myanmar, according to CBCI news.
The press statement issued by the Commission's secretary, Fr Soosai Sebastin, read: “The Christian community in India has watched with anguish the brutal repression of civil liberties, Human Rights and democratic yearnings of the people of our neighbouring country, Myanmar.”
“The most reprehensible recent military attempt to crush the peaceful protest of Buddhist monks of Burma has shaken the conscience of the world, and has moved the people of India who fully understand what it means to be not just free, but to enjoy the fruits of Independence in an environment of democracy, free speech, a free media and basic human rights,” quoted CBCI, Fr Soosai saying.
For 40 years, Myanmar has been ruled by a brutal military regime that resists and represses movements for democratic change. Leading opposition leaders such as Nobel–prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi and U Win Tin, have been arrested and jailed.
Christian leaders and organisations worldwide have condemned the military rule of Junta and has appealed for a peaceful solution.
