WCC Calls for Global Peace Campaign This Advent

Friday, December 1, 2017, 16:31 (IST)

The World Council of Churches has called Christians to participate in a global campaign, "A Light of Peace", a move seeking a world free from nuclear weapons. The church body has also urged the Christian community to observe the first Sunday in Advent, Dec. 3, and express solidarity "for the Korean people and to support efforts to ease tensions and sustain hope."

WCC has been involved in dialogue between Christians from both North and South Korea for the last three decades.

Many people have already pledged to hold special prayers with candle lights and worship services to "unify and amplify voices of peace."

On the second Sunday in Advent, Dec. 10, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, one of WCC's partners, will receive the Nobel Peace Prize at an award ceremony in Oslo, Norway.

WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit urged global peace groups and peace seekers to promote peace programs and nuclear disarmament on the first two weeks of Advent.

"We want to ensure that people stay aware of the unstable and dangerous situation on the Korean Peninsula and the threat posed by nuclear weapons," said Tveit.

"At the same time, we want to emphasize the peace-building strengths of churches, and of the WCC and its partners, and our commitment to nuclear disarmament," Tveit added.
