Mother Teresa's 109th birth anniversary was celebrated at her tomb in the Mother House in Kolkata and at her bronze statue that marks her canonization in 2016.
Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, North Macedonia. At the age of 18, she left home and joined the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Irelands's Rathfarnham.
In 1929, she entered India and taught history and geography at Calcutta's Loreto St Mary's Girls High School for 15 years.
In 1948, she decided to aid the poor and needy in Kolkata and adopted a lifestyle in slums.
In her profession as a nun, she founded the Roman Catholic religious congregation, popularly known as the Missionaries of Charity.
She was honored with Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize in 1962 and Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
In 2016, the Roman Catholic Church canonized Mother Teresa as a saint, setting the date on the eve of the anniversary of her death, September 4.
