In the anti-CAA protest in Kolkata, priests in cassocks hit the streets and claimed that Christians could be the next to be excluded from the circle of the amended citizenship law.
While Christians have been protesting against the CAA and NRC, this is the first time when priests in Kolkata came out to voice their condemnation against the controversial law approved by the pro-Hindu government.
"We are here to protest the NRC and CAA. I want to tell the Prime Minister that we want to die in the home we were born in, along with Hindus and Muslims," said Reverend Shyamal Pramanik.
Reverend Margaret Nilanjana Ali, a woman priest in a white robe told, "Yes, I am a Christian, a woman and I too have a message for the Prime Minister. Kindly stop this CAA and NRC. This is dividing our country. We are a united, democratic and secular nation and we want to stay that way."
The priests along with Christians from other denominations and people of all faiths marched from St. Paul's Cathedral to the Gandhi statue on Mayo Road on January 20.
The Church of North India bishop said that "We are praying to God to change the minds of the ruling authorities and rethink CAA-NRC."
