NCCI: Conflicts cannot be resolved by means of violence

The National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) expressed deep anguish over the loss of "innocent lives" at the various incidents of violence by both "state and non-state actors" across the country.

Referring to the recent Gnaneshwari Rail Mishap, Dantewada Maoist Attack, Manipur-Nagaland border riots, Orissa anti-POSCO and anti- TATA struggles, NCCI said, the "use of fire arms, policing, sabotage, road blockades and many other means" had enormously affected the lives of men, women and children in India.

"NCCI strongly opposes and rejects the violent path taken by the concerned as a means to realize their aspirations and solution to their problems," the Council said in a statement. "Denial and violation of human rights and dignity cannot ever lead us to realize the goals and objectives of shalom."

The ecumenical body - representing over 13 million people from Protestant and Orthodox Churches of India - urged the Indian Government to "revisit the grievances of people through a holistic approach which should be humane and provide stability, security, dignity and livelihood, instead of looking at it as a law and order issue."

"All stake holders should join hands in working out a pragmatic plan of action towards achieving just-peace," it pleaded.

Additionally, Churches irrespective of confessions and denominations must "come together along with other faiths as an interfaith response to carry out the mission of bringing equitable justice and peace for all."

In making these recommendations, NCCI said it affirms that "all life is a gift from God."

"Therefore, it is incumbent upon one and all to put aside the differences of language, culture, religion, class and caste to preserve, protect, respect and promote life to the fullest."
