Mohali Church Priest Arrested for Fraud

The police have arrested a priest of church in Mohali for allegedly stealing money from a private bank account of a person, living abroad.

The accused priest was found to be Veenu Gopal of Hasanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He has allegedly committed a fraud of Rs 5 lakh after opening an account in the ICICI Bank in the name of the victim, Apindernath, while submitting fake documents in a local branch.

The victim, residing abroad, has also an account in the same bank, said the police.

"The accused opened an account in name of Apindernath and gave the bank a copy of fake Aadhaar card, having his photo. After getting cheque book in the name of the victim, he transferred Rs 5 lakh from Apindernath's account to the fake account", they added, according to Tribune.

The victim learned about the fraud only after receiving a bank message on his mobile phone following the withdrawal. He immediately alarmed the bank about the fraud through email.

Police said the accused was caught and arrested on the complaint of a bank employee.

First Information Report (FIR) has been filed and the accused will be produced in a local court on Nov. 18.
