Meitei Baptist convention concludes in Manipur

The first Meitei Baptist convention of the Meitei Christian churches in Manipur concluded yesterday.

The three-day-meeting was held at the Union Baptist Church at Kakching and was attended by over 1000 Christians from all over the state.

Opening the meet, state president of the All India Christian Council, Manipur, Rev Nipamcha Ningombam, urged Christians to stand united to proclaim the Gospel of Christ for a transformation in the state.

Hemanta Sougrakpam, a noted Shumang Leela artist and secretary of Sanaleibak Nachom, rendered the keynote address.

He said unity among the Meitei Christians would play a vital role in bringing peace and harmony among the different societies of the state, according to Imphal Press.

Secretary of the Womens Action for Development, Sobita Monsangtam, spoke on women's empowerment and the need to combat gender discrimination faced by the female communities in the state.

Meitei Christians in Manipur and other northeast states are members of different denominations that include Baptist, Presbyterian, Evangelical, etc. They number over 15,000 with nearly 1,000 churches.
