Karnataka state govt. guarantees protection of rights of all citizens

Responding to a petition filed by Christians, the Karnataka state government on Wednesday informed the High Court that, it would protect the rights of all citizens in the state, irrespective of caste, creed or religion.

The submission was rendered while A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran and Justice V.G. Sabhahit was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by Christians in the state.

Claiming that several Hindu radicals and fundamental organisations have been involved in arson and attack against Churches, the petitions sought for the court's intervention. They alleged that, even the district administration, particularly the Deputy Commissioner (DC), had failed to provide adequate protection to them.

From recently, violence has been escalating against Churches and members of its community. Last week, two pastors were arrested on charges of "forceful conversion". The same day, another church was razed down and its members injured.

The state is yet to recover from the Mangalore violence, where over 20 prayer halls were attacked by the members of Bajrang Dal.
