Indonesian Suicide Bombings: 3 Churches Attacked, 13 Killed

Thursday, June 7, 2018, 22:35 (IST)

Deadly waves of suicide bombings carried out by members of the same family have struck three churches in Indonesia on May 13 killing 13 people and injuring another 41.

A family of six members, the youngest of whom were girls aged 9 and 12, and another person were killed in the attack on the churches during Sunday morning services in Surabaya, according to police.

Indonesia's president condemned the attacks as "barbaric."

National police chief Tito Karnavian said that members of one family carried out the suicide bombings.

For their attacks, the father used a car bomb, two sons aged 18 and 16 denoted a motorcycle, and the mother and her two daughters wore explosives, Karnavian added.

Police said it is one of the worst attacks since the 2002 Bali bombings, which killed over 200 people — mostly foreign tourists.
