Hope of peace in South Sudan

Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, there has been constant civil war between president, Salva Kiir, and former vice President, Reik Machar.

In the past, the two opposing groups came to several peace agreements but due to constant civil war, hundreds of thousands of people were killed and many were displaced.

The Vatican hosted the two groups in Rome where they signed a peace deal that came into effect on January 15.

Following the peace-building meeting, there is currently a hope that peace may return to the nation.

The backing of Pope and the Catholic Church, who have great influence in South Sudan, is seen as the main reason for peace in the nation.

Additionally, the opposition leaders who were previously excluded or unwilling to sign the earlier deals have signed the newest agreement because they were humbled by the relentless spiritual and moral appeal for peace, reconciliation and fraternity by Pope Francis and other religious leaders.

Following the peace agreement, there is hope that South Sudan may witness peace and unity after years of violence and hatred.
