COVID-19 cases surge, India becomes second most affected after USA
Tuesday, September 8, 2020, 22:32 (IST)
The number of coronavirus cases in India surpassed that of Brazil when it registered more than 90,000 fresh cases on Monday.
With around 4.3 million cases, India becomes the second worst-affected country in the world after the United States, which has recorded more than 6.4 million cases so far.
Though the caseload in India is lower than that of the USA, the virus continues to spread at a faster rate. The country's total COVID-19 death toll has surpassed 73,000 with more than 1,000 people dying each day.
In March, the country imposed one of the biggest lockdowns in history confining the 1.3 billion population at home. The strict measures taken during the pandemic took a heavy economic and humanitarian toll that prompted the government to gradually reopen the country.
The nation's GDP between April and June of this year shrank by 23.9% compared to 2019. Millions lost their jobs, and the poor laborers continue to suffer.
More and more cases are being reported in rural villages where medical facilities are scarce. It is uncertain when the infection will hit its peak, but experts predict that the country will soon have most COVID-19 cases in the world.
