Christian Cemetery Vandalised in Belgaum, Karnataka

A Catholic Christian cemetery at Bharatnagar of Shahapur area, which is about 2kms from Belgaum city and comes under old Belgaum which is known for its handloom mills was found vandalised.

A cemetery in Belgaum of Karnataka was found vandalized this past Monday morning when a group of people went to bury their dead.

The vandals have uprooted more than a dozen crosses, broke up some grave stones and dig up some graves.

The incident happened at Bharatnagar of Shahapur area, which is about 2kms from Belgaum city and comes under old Belgaum which is known for its handloom mills.

A burnt waiting room inside the cemetery with empty liquor bottles and scattered material presented a very sad picture, which, as the Bishop described, "Is the second holiest place after the church."

After the matter was matter was brought to notice of the Church authorities in the region, a police complain was lodged in Shahapur.

Bishop Peter Machado of Belgaum said the incident has hurt the sentiments of Christian community. He requested the Belgaum City Corporation to provide proper fencing around the cemetery to avoid such incidents in the future while requesting the police for a thorough investigation.

Further investigation by the local police is underway and no arrests have been made at press time.
