Christian Body Offer Aid to Victims of Assam and Bihar Floods

Amid continuous flood in Assam and Bihar, Christian bodies have reached out to the flood affected areas in these states to offer aid.

Caritas India, a charity organization that comes under the umbrella of the Catholic Church, has come to the rescue of lakhs of people affected by the devastating floods by offering 50 million rupees (US$ 780,000) to provide emergency assistance.

The organization is also handing out food, medicine and tents for the victims. According to Vatican Radio, volunteers are also setting up medical camps.

Fr Frederick D'Souza, executive director of Caritas India said that the organization has already provided aid worth 20 million rupees (US$ 310,000) in Bihar.

"We have a target of reaching altogether 50 million Indian Rupees and cover more people as the floods in Bihar is devastating," said D'Souza.

He also noted that the organization helped people without discriminating on the basis of religion. It was an act of humanity with the goal of providing basic needs of everyone.

Gerald Mathias, the bishop of the diocese of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh said that his diocesan administration is fully involved in aiding the victims in the state.

The floods have claimed 253 lives and has affected about 1.26 crore people in Bihar alone. In Assam, close to 19 lakh people were affected in 15 districts of the state.

The floods have drowned 1,493 villages destroying 1.15 lakh hectares of crop area.
