New Delhi: In a recent development in the flood inflicted Assam and Manipur, Caritas India came forward with the relief and rehabilitation effort for the affected families.
According to the latest reports, the death toll in Assam floods has risen to 48 even as the water in 10 of the 21 district have started receding.
The districts that are most affected by the floods are Dhemaji, Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Barpeta, Morigaon, Cachar, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Dhubri, Goalpara and Nagaon, where 5.16 lakh people are affected, according to an Assam State Disaster Management Authority report.
Some 40,000 families were provided aid and relief through the zonal teams in collaboration with five member organisations.
According to Sources, some 236 quintals of food rations were distributed to the flood affected people, about a 1000 persons have benefitted with the cash for work policy and 50 houses were restored. A large number of people were provided the basic facilities of clean drinking water, medical aid and makeshift accommodation in the camps. Among them, widows and differently abled were given the priority.
The flood in Manipur and Assam has ravaged villages, destroying farms, fields and houses in its wake, affecting about 2 lakh people.
The upcoming International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (ICDRR) to be organized by Caritas on October 6-7 will have a task at hand as one of the points on the agenda will be highlighting the yearly floods in Assam and Manipur and advocating the same to government and International agency for coordinated relief efforts in the future.
