Canadian Church to Raise Funds to Help Sex Trade Victims in India

Monday, July 31, 2017, 15:31 (IST)

Christians in Canada have planned to raise funds to help victims of the sex trade in India. The Hi-Way Pentecostal Church will organize a giant garage sale at the church on July 29.

In a two-week church mission to India, taking place Sept. 7 to 21, a team of missionaries will stay at a brothel in Kolkata. They will help young women and men to step out of the cycle of prostitution.

According to Simcoe.com, for the fundraiser there will be garage sale bargains, 16 vendors and artisans on site, baked goods and a barbecue.

The mission team has collaborated with Jewels in a Crown, an organization that helps victims of human trafficking learn to make jewelry.

"That jewelry is then sold back here in Canada so they have some income to break the cycle of prostitution," said Stephanie Mathes, who will be part of the mission.

The team will also visit an orphanage in India known as the Barrie Dream Centre in Malkangiri.
