A Bangladeshi was found to be guilty of raping an elderly nun in West Bengal, a crime that triggered an outpouring of anger from high-profile in India.
Kolkata on Nov. 7 court accused Nazrul Islam guilty of rape and attempted murder of the 71-year-old nun.
The incident took place in 2015, when a mob broke into the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Ranaghat where the nun lived in the eastern state of West Bengal.
"It was a shameful act," said Kumkum Singha, additional judge at the City Sessions Court.
Islam will be sentenced on Nov. 8.
While Islam was the only one involved in raping the nun, five others were charged with other offences unrelated to the sexual assault. The robbers were charged for stealing cash and other items.
According to sources, a Bible was also torn and a statue of Jesus was broken.
Following the incident, priests and schoolchildren demanded justice for the "inhuman" crime, as they demonstrated on the streets of West Bengal.
In support to the demonstration, shops and schools were closed, candlelit vigils were conducted outside the hospital where the nun underwent surgery for injuries suffered during the attack.
Government records for 2015 showed 34,651 rapes were reported in the country.
