Bangalore archdiocese offers help to Japan victims

The archdiocese of Bangalore promised to donate Rs 10 lakh to help in relief measures in Japan that has been hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Archbishop of Bangalore Bernard Moras and leaders of other religious communities last week gathered at the Mahatma Gandhi Statue on MG Road to pray for Japan.

More than 500 people took part in the prayer meeting, including two officials from the Japanese consulate in Bangalore.

Archbishop Moras, Moulvi Syed Arshad Ali, Nagendra Prasad Jain and Uday Thakur recited prayers and extended solidarity to the people of Japan

On the occassion, Archbishop Moras announced that a donation of Rs 10 lakh would be made for the relief and rehabilitation of the affected tsunami victims.

Over 8,000 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 12,000 were unaccounted for after a magnitude-9 earthquake struck northeast Japan on March 11.

India has sent rescue teams and relief materials to aid the victims."We are in touch with the government of Japan to ascertain the kind of assistance they need," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Parliament, adding a shipment of 25,000 blankets was being rushed for homeless survivors.
